Take a seat in the Histon & Impington Community Orchard…
To celebrate our fifth birthday in August last year we decided to support a small number of local causes and to give something back to our local community in Histon & Impington. One of our donations was to the Histon & Impington Community Orchard, which has always been a serene space for a relaxing walk and as such has become something of a retreat during the Covid-19 pandemic.

Dan Mace from HICOP, who manage the orchard, explains the background to how our donation was used. ‘The Community Orchard has been a haven to many over the last year; it’s a great outdoor space to meet up with people, whilst safely following the Coronavirus restrictions. The existing seating is used regularly by many and so the HICOP committee decided to use the money from Award Property to buy an extra bench and this was installed over the Easter weekend. The new bench is in the far corner of the orchard, with a view looking down the 20th Century Orchard – this is a group of 22 trees planted in the same style that would have been common in our village in the early 20th Century.
‘The trees are small, for ease of picking, and include varieties that were grown commercially in Histon, Impington and neighbouring villages. The varieties include Chivers Delight (a sweet dessert apple, bred in the village) and Newton’s Wonder (an eating apple that is good for baking and juicing). We’re extremely grateful to Andrew Ward and all at Award Property Management for their generous donation and hope that everyone will enjoy making good use of the new bench.’
And speaking about the new bench, Andrew Ward of Award Property highlighted how it was an ideal way to make use of the donation, given the effect of the Covid-19 pandemic and the increased desire for tranquillity. ‘As a business we were delighted to reach our fifth anniversary in August, and we were determined to mark the occasion by giving something back to the local community in which we’ve been based since our launch,’ commented Andrew. ‘The idea of supporting the Histon & Impington Community Orchard was very appealing as we know from our own experience how valuable a peaceful space for exercise and reflection can be, especially during a pandemic such as the one we’ve experienced. We are thrilled with the design and position of the bench and we hope that it will provide the opportunity for local people to spend time together in line with current government guidelines.’
